It might have been cold and frosty outside, but St Mary’s Church, hosting Farlington School’s Carol Service, radiated a warmth and joy which stirred and uplifted the packed congregation. From the opening candlelit procession to the final joyful rendering of ‘Hark the Herald’ – complete with exhilarating trumpets – the whole service showed the most impressive musicianship and organisation, with four choirs, soloists and instrumental groups, interspersed with a delightful selection of Christmas readings, both sacred and secular.

The choir items, ranging from Handel and Schutz to Rutter and Meredith Willson, were sung with perfect harmony, and the soloists – many unaccompanied – sounded equally professional. Millie, recollecting wonderful Christmases with her late father, brought a tear to the eye which was swiftly dispelled by a splendid Sixth Form rendition of the classic ‘It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas’; and the final massed choir’s rendition of ‘Bethlehem’ from  ‘Martin Guerre’ – complete with  thunderous organ and wonderfully theatrical son et lumière effects – brought the service to a truly joyful conclusion.
